SR-22 Filing in California — Fast, Electronic, Same-Day
If the DMV is waiting on your SR-22, we can get it filed quickly — often the same day. "Filing" simply means your insurer sends an official SR-22 certificate to the California DMV to confirm you carry at least the state's required liability coverage. It's a one-page electronic transmission attached to your policy, not something you have to mail or hand-deliver yourself. As licensed California specialists (CA License #6013015), we handle the entire filing for you: we bind a compliant policy, transmit the SR-22 to the DMV electronically, and confirm it's on record. Here's exactly what that involves.
TL;DR: SR-22 filing = your insurer certifying to the DMV that you're covered. In California it's done electronically, usually same-day. Keep the policy active or an SR-26 cancellation gets filed and your license can be re-suspended. No car? A non-owner filing works. Call (657) 600-0955.
What "SR-22 filing" actually means
An SR-22 is a certificate of financial responsibility. Filing it means your insurance company formally notifies the California DMV that you hold a policy meeting the state minimums — currently 30/60/15 (as of January 1, 2025): $30,000 bodily injury per person, $60,000 per accident, $15,000 property damage. The certificate is tied to your policy, so the DMV always knows whether your coverage is active.
Two things to keep straight:
- The filing is not the policy. You still carry a normal auto policy; the SR-22 sits on top of it as proof. New to this? Start with what an SR-22 is.
- California uses the SR-22 form — not FR-44. FR-44 exists only in Florida and Virginia, so any FR-44 reference doesn't apply here.
Electronic, same-day filing
California processes SR-22s electronically, which is good news when you're on a deadline. Once your policy is active, we transmit the certificate to the DMV — in most cases the same day. There's no waiting for paper to travel through the mail, and nothing for you to submit to the DMV yourself. If you're racing a reinstatement deadline, tell us up front and we'll prioritize your filing.
The filing fee itself is small (often around $25) and is separate from your insurance premium. The larger cost is the high-risk policy behind the filing — see cheap SR-22 insurance in California for ways to keep it affordable, or the full walkthrough on how to get an SR-22.
What happens at the DMV after we file
Once the SR-22 reaches the DMV:
- The DMV records the certificate against your driver record.
- It confirms your coverage meets the current minimums.
- To restore your driving privilege, you typically also pay the DMV reissue fee — $55 standard, but DUI/APS reinstatements usually use the $125 APS reissue fee (plus roughly $15 admin). Don't assume the $55 rate applies to a DUI case.
- Once the DMV has your SR-22 on file, your reissue fee, and any other requirements (like a DUI program or ignition interlock, if applicable), it reinstates your license.
For the DMV forms, fees, and process in detail, see the California DMV SR-22 guide. Remember: we're a licensed insurance agency, not the DMV — we handle the insurance filing; the DMV handles reinstatement. (And note that the SR-22 must be filed by the carrier itself — an agent or broker can't issue one independently.)
The SR-26 warning — keep your filing active
This is the most important thing on this page. If your policy lapses, cancels, or drops below required coverage, your insurer is legally required to file an SR-26 — the cancellation counterpart to the SR-22 — notifying the DMV that your proof of coverage has ended. The likely result: your license is re-suspended, and in many cases your three-year filing clock restarts from zero.
A single missed payment can undo months of progress. This is the number-one reason people get set back, and it's entirely avoidable. When we manage your policy, we keep an eye on renewals and payments with you so an accidental lapse never triggers an SR-26.
No car? Non-owner SR-22 filing
You don't need to own a vehicle to file an SR-22. A non-owner (operator) SR-22 certifies you as a driver rather than certifying a specific car, which lets you reinstate without owning one. It's often the more affordable route for people who borrow or occasionally rent vehicles. We file non-owner SR-22s just as quickly as owner filings — learn more on our non-owner SR-22 page.

Frequently asked questions
How long does an SR-22 filing take in California? Usually the same day. California accepts SR-22s electronically, so once your policy is active we can transmit it to the DMV immediately.
Do I file the SR-22 myself or does the insurer? Your insurer files it. We send the certificate to the DMV on your behalf — you don't submit anything to the DMV for the filing itself.
What is an SR-26? An SR-26 is the cancellation notice your insurer files if your policy lapses or ends. It tells the DMV your SR-22 is no longer active and can trigger a re-suspension, so keeping your policy active is critical.
Can I file a non-owner SR-22 if I don't have a car? Yes. A non-owner SR-22 certifies you as a driver and lets you reinstate without owning a vehicle. See details.
How much does the SR-22 filing cost? The filing fee is small (often around \$25). Separately, the DMV reissue fee is \$55 standard, or \$125 for DUI/APS reinstatements (plus ~\$15 admin). The main ongoing cost is your policy premium.
